Hyrox Shoe Rules, What's Allowed, What's Banned (2026)
Hyrox has no specific shoe rule, but unspoken constraints apply. Here's what you can and can't wear, plus the shoes top finishers actually race in.
Hyrox has no official shoe rule. Any closed-toe athletic shoe is legal. The unwritten constraints are:
- No spikes or cleats that damage the venue floor.
- No outdoor shoes caked with mud or grit (clean shoes only).
- No bare feet, sandals, or open-toed footwear.
That’s it. Beyond those obvious limits, you can race in any shoe.
The harder question is “what should you wear”, and the answer depends on what you’re optimising for.
The only formal restriction
Hyrox’s rulebook simply requires:
Athletes must wear closed-toe athletic footwear suitable for indoor sport. Footwear must not damage the venue surface.
Spikes, golf cleats, and football studs are the practical no-go list. Everything else is your call.
What’s banned in practice
- Track spikes (any spike under the forefoot)
- Football / rugby boots with studs
- Any metal-cleated shoe
- Open-toed shoes, sandals, hiking boots, work boots
- Visibly muddy outdoor shoes (judges may turn you away)
What’s allowed but suboptimal
- Carbon-plated marathon shoes (Nike Vaporfly, Adidas Adios Pro, etc.), fast on running, but unstable on the sled push and risky on the lunges. Not banned, just risky.
- Pure max-cushion running shoes (Hoka Bondi, Brooks Glycerin Max), soft underfoot, slow energy return on sled push.
- Old-school CrossFit shoes (early Nike Romaleos), lifting-shoe heel raises hurt running.
What top finishers actually wear
Three categories dominate the Hyrox podium:
1. Hybrid trainers (most popular for serious athletes)
Designed specifically for the Hyrox-style mix of running + functional work:
- Puma Fast-R Hyrox (official Hyrox sponsor)
- Puma Deviate Nitro Hyrox
- Nike Pegasus with cross-training tweaks
- On Cloudflyer
- TYR CXT-2
These shoes prioritise a stable platform under load, decent cushioning for running, and grip for the sled push.
2. Lightweight road runners (fastest on running)
For athletes whose finish time is run-limited:
- Saucony Endorphin Speed
- Asics Magic Speed
- Adidas Boston
- Nike Vomero / Pegasus
Best if you’re under ~80 kg, have strong ankles, and your sled push isn’t a weak point.
3. CrossFit-style training shoes (most versatile, slight running penalty)
For first-timers and stations-dominant athletes:
- Nike Metcon 9
- NoBull Trainer / Trainer+
- Reebok Nano X4
- TYR CXT-1
Adds 30-90 seconds to your finish vs a runner, but you’re never wishing you had more grip on the sled push.
Can you change shoes mid-race?
Technically yes, see our full guide on shoe changes. Practically: it costs 30-60 seconds and is rarely worth it.
Race-day shoe checklist
- Race in shoes you’ve trained in for at least 6 weeks.
- Don’t race in brand-new shoes: even a perfect model out of the box will give you blisters by km 5.
- Bring a backup pair in your bag in case of last-minute issues (broken lace, etc.).
- Lace them snugly: looser than running lacing, tighter than walking. Especially across the bridge of the foot for the sled push.
- Tape any hot spots before race day if you have known blister-prone areas.
What about shoe cleaning?
Some venues (e.g. London ExCeL, Tempelhof Berlin) have started informally checking that outdoor shoes have been cleaned before entering the race floor. Bring a cloth and wipe down the soles before warm-up. This isn’t an official rule, but a venue staff member can refuse you if your shoes are visibly muddy.
